Prochlorperazine Maleate

Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Psychoses. Nausea and vomiting. Severe anxiety disorders. Vertigo.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
CNS depression, comatose patients. Bone marrow depression, phaechromocytoma, prolactin-dependent tumours. Hypersensitivity. Pregnancy, lactation and children below the age of two years.

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

Extrapyramidal syndrome, epilepsy, impaired hepatic, renal, CV, cerebrovascular or respiratory function. History of jaundice, myasthenia gravis, paralytic ileus and prostatic hyperplasia.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

Cholestatic jaundice, cardiac arrhythmias, orthostatic hypotension, leucopaenia, thrombocytopaenia, dry mouth, blurring of vision, glaucoma, urinary retention, constipation, galactorrhoea, gynaecomastia, numbness of gum and tongue. Bone marrow suppression.
