Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?
Orally used for bacterial diarrhoeas and dysentery. Preparation of bowel before surgery. Hepatic coma. Topically for infected wound, ulcers, burn, external ear infections, conjunctivitis.
Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?
Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient Hypersensitivity. Renal impairment. Pregnancy and lactation.
Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication
Prolonged use can induce malabsorption syndrome with diarrhoea and steatorrhoea. It decreases absorption of digoxin, bile acid reabsorption and lowers plasma cholesterol levels. Due to marked suppression of gut flora, super infection by Candida can occur.
What are possible side effects of this medication ?
Ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity.
