Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?
Osteoporosis, catabolic states. Renal insufficiency. To counteract glucocorticoid. Subopti - mal growth in children. Hypoplastic haemolytic or malignancy associated anaemia. To enhance physical ability in athletes. Chronic debilitating diseases especially in elderly patients to correct defective protein metabolism. Following surgery, burns or major illness.
Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?
Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient Carcinoma, o prostate, male breast, some female breast. Nephrotic syndrome. Hepatic impairment. Nephrosis. Porphyria.
Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication
Diabetes, epilepsy, cardiac disease. Prostatic hypertrophy. Menstrual irregularities. Monitor thyroid and liver functions and metyrapone tests. May alter glucose tolerance test. Watch for oedema and signs of testicular inhibition.
What are possible side effects of this medication ?
Oedema, cholestatic jaundice, hepatic carcinoma. Gynaecomastia. Precocious puberty and shortening of stature due to early closure of epiphysis. Rashes, cramps, dyspepsia. Virilization and menstrual irregularities.
