Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?

Ventricular tachyarrhythmias. Surface application, infiltration, nerve block epidural, spinal and intravenous regional block anaesthesia. Topical useful for pain and itching due to minor burns, insect bites, haemorrhoids, fissures. Endotracheal intubation. Otological, rectal and vaginal examination. Urethral operations, Catheterization cystoscopy. Painful cystitis.

Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?

Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient
Hypersensitivity to amide group of local anaesthetics. A.V. block cardiac decompensation, serious conduction disturbances, bradycardia

Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication

Renal or hepatic impairment, hypotension, ECG monitoring must during therapy. Adequate resuscitation equipment must be available whenever local anaesthesia is administered. Bradycardia.

What are possible side effects of this medication ?

The reactions are primarily of two types and typified by stimulation and depression of the cerebral cortex and medulla respectively. Slow onset, stimulation leading to Nervousness, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, tremors, convulsions and respiratory arrest. Rapid onset, depression leading to: Respiratory arrest. Cardiovascular collapse and cardiac arrest. Symptoms may occur rapidly and without warning.
