Antimicrobial spectrum of streptoycin is relatively narrow, active primarily against aerobic gram-negative bacilli, but potency is low. Sensitivie organisms are - H.ducreyi, Brucella, Yersinia pestis, Francisella tularensis, Nocardia, Calym, granulomatis, M.tuberculosis, Only few strains of E.coli, H.influenzae, V.cholerae, Shigella, Klebsiella, entero-cocci and some gram-positive cocci. Due to high incidence of toxicity both to cochlea and kidney it is now occasionally used only as a second line drug in resistant tuberculosis.
Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?
Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient Hypersensitivity. Pregnancy and lactation. Renal impairment.
Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication
Parkinsonism, myasthenia gravis. Should not be interacted with neuromuscular blocking drugs, anaesthetics, frusemide, ethacrynic acid. Control blood levels and total dosage in patients with renal impairment. Infants, neonates and elderly.
What are possible side effects of this medication ?
Irreversible hearing loss, toxic to kidney. Neuromuscular blockade.
