Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?
Replacement therapy: Adrenal insufficiency. Adrenogenital syndrome. Nonendocrine diseases: Rheumatoid arthirits. Osteoarthritis, Acute gouty arthirits. Collagen diseases e.g. systemic lupus erythematosus, polyarteritis nodosa, dermatomyositis, nephritic syndrome, glomerulonephritis and related diseases. Severe allergic reactions e.g. anaphylaxis, angioneurotic edema, urticaria and serum sickness and related diseases. Autoimmune diseases e.g. haemolytic anaemia, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, active chronic hepatitis and related diseases. Other lung diseases e.g. pulmonary edema, accelerate lung maturation and surfactant production in the foetus and prevent respiratory distress syndrome at birth. Infective diseases e.g. severe forms of tuberculosis, severe lepra reaction, certain forms of bacterial meningitis and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia with hypoxia in AIDS patients along with proper antibiotic cover. Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?
Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient Viral, fungal, tuberculous or purulent infections unless until treated with proper antibiotic concurrently. Pregnancy. New born babies, premature infants or children below the age of five years. Peptic ulcer. Psychosis. Epilepsy. Renal failure. Osteoporosis. In ophthalmology, herps zoster, herpetic or fungal xeratitis, previous history of cataract.
Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication
Prolong use. CHF, hypertension, DM. Elderly and lactation.
What are possible side effects of this medication ?
Cushings habitus. Peptic ulceration may be aggravated. Sodium and fluid retention. Potassium and Calcium depletion. Muscle wasting, osteoporosis. GI disturbances and bleeding. Increased appetite and delayed wound healing. Bruising, striae, hirsutism, acne, flushing. Headache, depression, psychosis, menstrual irregularity. Suppression of pitutary-adrenocortical system. Dermal atrophy. Hyperglycaemia. Susceptibility to infection. Osteoporosis. Growth retardation. Foetal abnormalities. Topical application to the eye can produce corneal ulcers, raised IOP, reduced visual function and posterior subcapsular cataract.
