Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?
Status epilepticus prevention and treatment of seizures during neurosurgery.
Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?
Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient Porphyria, sinus bradycardia, SA block, 2nd and 3rd degree heart block. Stokes-Adams syndrome. Pregnancy and lactation.
Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication
Hepatic or renal impairment, hypoalbuminaemia, elderly patients, requiring phosphate restriction, resuscitation facilities must be available. Monitor ECG, BP and resp function during infusion.
What are possible side effects of this medication ?
Burning, itching and paraesthesia in the groin area following IV admin, asystole, ventricular fibrillation, hypotension, bradycardia, heart block. Severe CV reactions.
