Anti- thrombotic, anti-inflammatory and profibronolytic properties. It is mainly used in intensive care unit as a conjunct treatment of severe sepsis. Although drotrecogin has potent anticoagulant properties, it is not indicated as an anticoagulant/anti thrombotic in patients without severe sepsis.
Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?
Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient Hypersensitivity. Active internal bleeding. Within 3 months of haemorrhagic stroke. Within 2 months of intracranial/intraspinal surgery/severe head injury. Presence of epidural catheder. Known intracranial neoplasm.
Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication
Patients on anticoagulant therapy. Platelet count less than 30,000/mm3. Within 6 weeks of gastrointestinal bleeding. H/o bleeding diathesis. Within 3 months of ischaemic stroke. Known intracranial aneurysm or AV malfomation. HIV infection with CD count less than 50/mm3.
What are possible side effects of this medication ?
Ecchymosis, GI bleeding. Intracranial haemorrhage Life threatening bleeding. Hypersensitivity.
