Indication : Why is this medication prescribed?
Eczema, psoriasis, otitis externa. Lichen simplex and planus. Anal and vulval pruritus. Contact dermatitis. Seborrhoeic dermatitis. Nasal congestion, inflammation and allergic condition of nose. Status asthmatic, acute allergic reactions, anaphylatic reaction to drugs, severe shock arising from surgical or accidental trauma or over whelming infection. Addisons disease, Simmonds disease, hypopitutarism following adrenalectomy.
Contraindication: What are the special precautions to be followed?
Under following conditions, use of this medication is inadvisable. Its use should be withhold as it would cause harm to the patient Scabies, acne, perioral dermatitis, furunculosis of skin, chicken pox and herpes. Untreated fungal or bacterial infections. Post vaccination skin erruptions. Viral, Fungal, tuberculous or purulent infections. Contraindicated during pregnancy. Contraindicated below the age of five years. Systemic infections, unless specific anti-infective therapy is employed. Live virus immunisation.
Other Precaution to be observed while taking this medication
Sudden withdrawal can produce rebound exacerbation of the condition. Avoid eyes. Use on face should be limited to 5 days. Prolonged use may impair the ability to resist and counteract infection. Due care to be taken while administering it in congestive heart failure, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, hypertension, glaucoma and epilepsy, previous steroid myopathy or peptic ulceration.
What are possible side effects of this medication ?
Skin atrophy. Vellus hair growth. Thinning of epidermis. Telangiectasia striae. Delayed wound healing. Fungal and bacterial infections. Systemically they can suppress adrenal pituitary excess. Subcapsular cataract, skin thinning, osteoporosis and glaucoma. Osteonecrosis particularly of femoral head. Peptic ulceration, altered fluid and electrolyte balance and psychic instability.
